Daniel Wakefield
This page is dedicated to Daniel Wakefield, a key member of the Melton Skaters Group who was killed in a road accident on Friday 11th May 2007.
If it wasn’t for Dan, there is a very large possibility that the skatepark wouldn’t be standing in the town park today. Dan played a major role alongside Duncan Greene and other members of the Melton Skaters Group and Melton Borough Council in organising the project and seeing through its success.
Dan played a big part in organising the various methods of fundraising we had. He had a large role in organising the Melton Skaters Concert, where he spent countless nights on the phone talking to the different bands confirming who could play, and getting all the other little details right.
Rollerblading was undoubtedly one of Dan’s favourite things to go out and do. He started off playing roller hockey with a bunch of people and then moved on to start aggressive skating with friends Duncan and Richard, which he continued to do for the rest of his life. Dan had his own style, going huge and doing massive jumps wasn’t always Dan’s thing, he preferred to do the technical switch ups and manuals, which to be fair, had their impressive moments!
It is always going to be a shame that Dan won’t get to see his finished skatepark with us. We can believe that he is watching it now and having his own laughs with us. We’ll all see you one day,
"I feel, by Dan Wakefield"
I feel an abundance of not knowing what to do when it rains,
I feel a pressure to get out the house,
I feel an urge,
I feel a pain when I haven't been with you for so long,
I feel a need to be inspired by others,
I feel numb beyond belief with pain and yet I still carry on,
I feel battered and bruised but its why I do it,
I feel the anticipation of not knowing,
I feel hopeless with progression but I can feel the aggression,
I feel the spitefulness of passers-by thinking they are the norm and we
are "different".
I feel the hate created by others,
I feel underestimated,
I feel misunderstood,
I feel the love,
I feel the respect,
I feel the need to skate,
I feel we are everything skateboarding used to be,
WE ARE ROLLERBLADERS, NOTHING ELSE
