Melton Skaters

History

Back in 2001, Duncan Greene, Daniel Wakefield and Richard Walton along with a few others started a petition to show the local council how much the skaters in Melton Mowbray wanted a new skatepark, but we missed the date for the council meeting when we were to present our petition and show the desire for a skatepark. After missing the date, we gave up, thinking that no one would listen to us anyway.

So a few months later we decided we would try to spark the idea up again after getting bored of skating the same old spots. We sent a letter to a Councillor who was trying to put things in motion for the youth of Melton and they said that they would speak to the right people next time they were in the Council offices.

All went well with the Council and we were called to attend a Council meeting to hand in our petition which had gathered around 300 signatures. We were joined at the meeting by some local BMXers who also gave in a petition with a huge amount of signatures.

Since that initial meeting, there have been many more meetings to discuss things like what land was actually available to build on, and how much funding the council would be able to supply, and how we could go about getting grants ourselves.

And so after countless meetings and numerous fundraising events, the skatepark was finally built in Spring 2007!
